Frequently Asked Fence Installation Questions
This shows the neat holes after we have removed some posts.
Do i need to remove the old Fence?
We include the removal of existing fence panels and posts as part of the quotation.
The process involved is to dig down below the existing post footings (these are often 2 ft deep) to remove the previous post crete. This has to be done carefully to avoid causing damage and a larger hole.
Depending on whether the hole is in soft ground such as soil or in concrete depends on what equipment is needed.
Once the hole has been dug out all the waste concrete, rubble and timber is removed from the site to allow the fresh installation.
This process can be carried out by us or the customer.
Can fences be repaired?
Yes - where feasible fences can be repaired. Often the fence panels need replacing before the posts and these can be swapped quite easily.
We also sell the individual timbers and repair kits so you are able to purchase the compenents to repair if necessary.
The overall age of the fence is always a consideration when deciding whether to repair or replace.
How is the fence secured of fixed down?
We offer a variety of different fixing solutions depending on the location of the installation.
- Bolt Down - these types of post connections are a steel base that the fence post sits in and is then bolt down to the surface ie concrete, tarmac, decking. These can be seen in our shop Bolt Down Fence Fixings
- Concrete in - these can be used when a driveway is being formed with liquid concrete and these is poured in at the same time the fence post is installed. These are for sale in our shop Concrete In Fixings
- Posts into Post Mix Footings - this is when timber posts are set into a hole with Post mix (or Post Crete). The posts are usually 1-2 feet into the ground. Post Mix can be bought here Post Mix
We would assess each individual job and ground conditions to choose the right fixings.
Does my Fence need any maintenance?
All the fence panels and posts we sell are tanalised which is a treatment at source that protects the wood against the elements so minimal maintenance required.
You can further treat the fence with an annual topical protection if needed like our Fence Paint or if you would like it a different colour.
The tanalising process gives the wood a green tinge which fades with aging.
How much does a Fence Installation Cost?
The cost of Fence fitting varies with a variety of factors and as such each job will need a site visit to provide an accurate quotation.
The factors include:
- Landscape - how flat or hilly is the area. What is the ground made of - ie grass is easier to dig into that concrete.
- Trees - are there any tree roots that could affect the location of the posts or digging.
- Type of fencing - some fences are easier to install than others. For example paling fence or featheredge fencing we can install on site and can be adjusted with the level of the land to give a flat top.
- Is there old fence to remove?
