Product Overview

Our timber paling boards are a popular choice for both DIY gardeners and professional fence installers.

Paling Fences are one of the most popular types of fence. They can form ready to install fence panels or you can create a long run of fencing using a backrail and posts and fasten the paling boards to the front (and back). Ideal for if the ground is uneven.

Each board measures 75mm x 16mm (3" x 5/8")

What is a paling fence?

A paling fence uses vertical timber slats (“pales”) fixed to horizontal rails. It offers privacy while allowing airflow and suits most garden boundaries and residential properties.

How do I build a paling fence?

Set fence posts at regular centres and secure in concrete.
Fix horizontal rails between posts.
Attach pales vertically to the rails with nails or screws.
Leave a small, even gap between boards for drainage and airflow.
Treat cut ends and consider an exterior wood finish for longevity.

How do I build a horizontal paling fence?

Install posts and rails as normal.
Fix pales horizontally with consistent gaps (or slight overlap if desired).
Check levels as you go for a straight, modern finish.
Use treated timber and seal cut ends for best durability.

Yes. Collect from our Bingley yard or arrange local delivery within ~20 miles (including Shipley, Bradford, Skipton, Ilkley and Otley). We also offer a fitting service please fill out a Contact Form

Timber Movement/Shrinkage

Wood is a natural product and over time with extreme weather of rain and sun the wood will contract and expand. This is not failure of the wood. Small splits, cracks and knots can be wood filled where needed.

Wood may also move after installation which can cause issues but is completely unavoidable and is a result of being a natural product and is not a failing.

Wood Aftercare

All wood requires treatment to protect against the elements. This must be done within 3 months of the timber being installed and annually thereafter.

Custom Cutting Service

We offer an in house cutting service if you need timber cutting to specific sizes.

However, during our busy seasons (spring/summer) our team is very busy. You may be required to leave your contact information to receive a call when this is ready to collect.

Important

Please bear in mind when requesting cut lengths of timber. That you need to allow for the cutting blades tolerance as this will impact the overall length of the timber.

Please be aware that all of our timber is purchased in metric lengths. We round to the nearest foot measurement. This may create a slight discrepancy when having things cut to size. Please bear this in mind when requesting cut lengths of timber.
